Don’t call it a comeback, RSS has been here for years

Ever since Twitter dropped another bomb on third-party developers last week, some people have vowed to quit Twitter and move to App.net. I decided to give it a shot and take a break from Twitter for a while. But, there’s one problem: I abandoned RSS years ago and have used Twitter as my news feed ever since.

What about RSS? Well, it’s fantastic and it’s been here all along. RSS isn’t much without a great app, however. Reeder is that app. For reading the news, RSS is better than Twitter. They both provide a stream of news, but the benefit of RSS is that there’s no noise from other people. RSS is like a quiet reading room in the library and Twitter is like reading a newspaper at a tailgate party.

Using Twitter as a news feed was likely a result of laziness or a preference to use one app rather than two. Somewhere along the line, I decided to start spending my library time outside with friends. It’s refreshing to get back to the library. Even if you still love Twitter, give RSS another shot. Subscribe to all your news in Reeder (or another RSS reader) and read the news in peace.
