Today, Instagram released version 3.0 of its apps, which includes a snazzy new photo map feature. The photo map displays all of your geotagged photos on a map as an alternative way to browse through them. When logging into version 3.0 of the app for the first time, it asks you to review your geotagged photos. The photos are all initially selected and organized by place. You have the option of deselecting all photos, deselecting all photos for each particular location, or individually deselecting photos. For example, I left most photos selected, but deselected some that were geotagged correctly but associated with the wrong place of business. I also deselected photos geotagged at my home. However, upon deselecting any photos for inclusion within the photo map, you receive the following message:

But I don’t want to permanently delete all location data from the photos, I just don’t want these particular photos displayed on the photo map. It sounds like the backend for this feature simply loads all geotagged photos onto the photo map. There is no option for a photo to retain location data and not be displayed on the photo map. Hopefully this is just an oversight and it is fixed soon. Until then, I’ll probably avoid this feature.
